School Trip Safety & Student Well-being on Tour

At GlobalEducationalTours.com, the safety and well-being of every student on tour is our highest priority. Meticulous planning, clear communication, and vigilant supervision are the cornerstones of every journey we plan.

Chaperone Ratios

Adult-to-Student Ratios

Recommended minimums — ratios must increase for overnight, international, or higher-risk activities

Middle & High School
1 : 10–12
1 adult per 10–12 students minimum
Elementary & Younger
1 : 5–8
1 adult per 5–8 students — closer supervision required
Increased Complexity
More adults required for:
Overnight trips  ·  International travel  ·  Special needs students  ·  Higher-risk activities
  • School Employee Presence:  At least one chaperone must be a school employee (teacher or administrator) fully familiar with district policies, emergency procedures, and student medical/behavioral records.
  • Background Checks:  All volunteer chaperones must clear required background checks and clearances as mandated by the school district.
  • Gender Representation:  Ideally at least one male and one female adult chaperone on every trip.
Safety Checklist

Chaperone Responsibilities

Maintaining a Safe Environment

Chaperones are the front line of student safety — these responsibilities are vital

Vigilant Supervision

Supervise assigned students at all times. Know where students are and what they are doing.

Adherence to Policy

Strictly adhere to all school policies — no use of personal vehicles, no sharing of personal contact information or social media with students.

Focus & Dedication

Limit distractions. Volunteer chaperones should not bring their non-trip children, as this detracts from primary supervisory duties.

Incident Reporting

All incidents — medical, behavioral, or safety concerns — must be reported immediately to the lead teacher or school employee. Chaperones should not handle discipline independently.

Professional Conduct

Maintain a positive attitude, communicate clearly with students and staff, and stay alert to surroundings and potential hazards at all times.
