From Stick-Shift Buses to a Global Vision: The Origin Story of Global Educational Tours
Picture this: it’s the 1980s, a time when shoulder pads were big, mixtapes were the ultimate gift, and student travel was a wild, uncharted adventure. There were no smartphones to navigate with, no Wi-Fi to check itineraries, and certainly no apps to streamline logistics. Tour buses? They were stick-shift, rattling beasts that required a driver’s grit and a guide’s unwavering optimism. This was the world where the story of Global Educational Tours began—a world where our founder, a young history student with a passion for education and exploration, first stepped onto the scene as a tour guide.
Back then, student travel wasn’t the polished industry it is today. It was raw, hands-on, and full of heart. Our founder learned the ropes from the pioneers of educational tours in Canada, including the legendary Chris Keating of Keating Educational Tours. Under Keating’s mentorship, and alongside other industry icons like John and Dave Temple our founder absorbed the golden rules of guiding: keep the kids safe, make learning fun, and turn every trip into a memory that lasts a lifetime. Those early days were a whirlwind of summer tours, guiding eager students through historic cities while balancing studies in history at university. Each cobblestone street in Quebec City, each monument in Ottawa, became a classroom without walls—a place where history came alive for the students and for our founder, too.
But those early years weren’t without their challenges. Coordinating a student trip in the ‘80s meant relying on paper maps, payphones, and a whole lot of patience. If a bus broke down (and they often did), you had to think on your feet. If a group got lost, you became the human GPS. Yet, through every hiccup, our founder discovered a deep love for the magic of educational travel—the way a student’s eyes lit up at the sight of the U.S. Capitol, or how a quiet kid found their voice during a scavenger hunt in Old Montreal. These moments fueled a dream: to make educational travel accessible, seamless, and unforgettable for every student and teacher.
Building Educatours: A Dream Takes Flight in Montreal
Fast forward to 1991. After years of guiding and learning the ins and outs of the industry, our founder took a bold leap—launching Educatours in Montreal, a city brimming with history and culture. Educatours wasn’t just a company; it was a mission to bring the transformative power of travel to as many students as possible. Starting small, with a handful of groups and a lot of ambition, Educatours quickly grew into a powerhouse. By its peak, the company was serving 24,000 passengers annually across 500 groups, with a dedicated team of 55 tour leaders guiding students to iconic destinations like New York, Boston, Washington, D.C., Montreal, Ottawa, and Quebec City.
Every trip was a labor of love. Our founder and the Educatours team worked tirelessly to craft itineraries that balanced education and excitement—think morning visits to the Smithsonian museums followed by afternoon scavenger hunts on the National Mall, or history lessons in Old Montreal paired with poutine tastings that had students laughing and bonding. Teachers loved the reliability; parents appreciated the safety measures; and students? They couldn’t stop talking about their adventures. Educatours became a name synonymous with trust, quality, and memories that shaped young lives.
But growth brought new challenges. The travel industry was evolving rapidly, with increased security measures, traffic congestion in major cities, and logistical complexities that made planning trips more daunting than ever. Our founder saw an opportunity to innovate, but also recognized that Educatours needed a bigger platform to continue its mission. In 2006, after 15 years of remarkable growth, Educatours was sold to a larger competitor. It was a bittersweet moment—saying goodbye to a company built from scratch, but opening the door to new adventures.
A New Chapter in Boston—and Beyond
The sale of Educatours led our founder to Boston, where they joined the acquiring company and dove deeper into the global travel industry. Boston, with its rich history and bustling student travel scene, was the perfect place to reflect on the past and dream about the future. While working in Boston, our founder co-founded another venture that eventually became part of Landmark Educational Tours, further honing their expertise and vision for student travel.
Yet, the challenges of modern student travel continued to weigh heavily. Teachers were spending countless hours on logistics—coordinating buses, hotels, and activities, managing student sign-ups, and navigating ever-changing travel regulations. Parents wanted more transparency and affordability, while students craved experiences that were both educational and Instagram-worthy. Our founder knew there had to be a better way—a way to bring the joy of travel back to the forefront, without the stress and hassle.
That’s when the idea for Global Educational Tours was born.
