I understand what drives educators: creating lifelong memories for students while fostering academic growth. That’s why I’ve devoted my career to designing engaging programs that cater to diverse needs and interests. In this post, I’ll share practical advice to help you build the perfect itinerary for your group, highlighting the magic of a winter trip to Québec City.
—Why Québec City?
Québec City offers a unique blend of history, culture, and hospitality that captivates students and educators alike. Our carefully curated programs showcase the city’s vibrant heritage, from medieval architecture to modern-day innovation. With engaging, immersive activities, you’ll watch your students develop a deeper appreciation for language, history, and the arts.
—A Winter Wonderland Itinerary
While every group is unique, this itinerary provides the foundation for a truly unforgettable winter adventure, combining two of the city’s most iconic events: the Québec Winter Carnival and the Ice Hotel.
The Québec Winter Carnival: A Legacy of Celebration
The tradition of a mid-winter celebration in Québec can be traced back to the history of New France, when families would gather to combat the cold and boredom of winter with feasts and music. The first large-scale winter festival, the Québec Winter Carnival, officially debuted in 1894. It was created by local businessmen to attract tourists and boost community spirit during the cold months. Early carnivals featured an ice palace, ice sculptures, parades, and the famous canoe race across the frozen St. Lawrence River. Interrupted by two World Wars and the Great Depression, the carnival was revived in 1954 and has been held annually ever since.
Our program includes a full day at this historic festival. You’ll receive your own Effigy, the official entry pass, granting you access to all sites and activities. You’ll witness the enduring traditions of the carnival firsthand, from the iconic night parades led by the beloved mascot Bonhomme Carnaval to the thrilling ice canoe race. The event is a deep immersion into French-Canadian culture, offering a unique glimpse into the resilience and “joie de vivre” of the Québécois people.

The Ice Hotel: An Evolving Masterpiece
North America’s first and only ice hotel, the Hôtel de Glace, opened its doors on New Year’s Day in 2001. The concept was inspired by the original ice hotel in Sweden, and it took four years of planning and research to bring the idea to life in Québec. The first iteration was built at Montmorency Falls Park. For nearly a decade, it moved to the Duchesnay resort before finding a new home in the Charlesbourg neighborhood of Québec City in 2011.
Since 2017, the Ice Hotel has been located at its permanent home on the sprawling grounds of Village Vacances Valcartier, an all-season resort. This new location provides a perfect pairing, allowing guests to experience the magical, ephemeral world of the Ice Hotel while having the amenities and warmth of the adjacent Hôtel Valcartier. Each year, a team of artists and builders rebuilds the hotel from scratch using thousands of tons of snow and ice, creating a new theme and unique works of art that are available for a limited time before the structure melts away with spring.
We offer an exclusive evening at the Ice Hotel for student groups. This is not a standard visit—it’s a private experience. You’ll get a guided tour of the sculpted rooms and learn the unique construction techniques. The highlight is a private student dance in the N’Ice Club, a disco built entirely from ice. You’ll dance under magnificent ice chandeliers in an event available only through our program.

—Preparing for Your Winter Adventure
To fully enjoy the magical atmosphere of a Québec winter, proper attire is essential. The key is dressing in layers and being prepared for cold temperatures. Make sure to have a warm, insulated winter coat, waterproof boots with excellent traction, and high-quality wool socks. A good pair of gloves or mittens and a warm hat are also non-negotiable. If you’re concerned about having the right gear, we offer a convenient winter clothing rental service to ensure your students are comfortable and can focus on the experience, not the cold.

Québec City presents an unparalleled opportunity for educators and students to deepen their understanding of language, history, and culture. By incorporating these principles into your curriculum-based travel program, you’ll create a transformative experience that extends far beyond the classroom.
